Factors to Consider in Finding Hot Selling Products

Signing up to be an affiliate has been easy.  There is no need to create a product and affiliate start that promote and sell at once.  A lot of resources have been read.  However, you still don't feel satisfied with the product you are promoting.  Have you picked the right product?

Surely there are unlimited goods and services, product lines, and specific products to promote and sell online; but the wide range of choices makes it difficult for an affiliate to choose.  To know if the product is right for you or not, a draw-lot technique must not be applied.  To objectively find the right product that would really sell, you need to research and this is the only option.

To find the products that sell online is to understand what people want to buy.  Choosing a good and highly saleable product is accompanied by interfacing the demand for the product in the current market and the level of competition or market share that the product will have in the long run.  This is looking at the current market situation and the trend it will make after some time.

There are three basic factors affecting a consumer’s purchase: needs, wants, and expectations.  Needs are the basic reasons consumers buy a product, and this is called the qualifying or the “gatekeeper” dimensions in a purchase.  Wants are the determining factors in a set of choices.  Expectations are also wants but they are extremely important when products or services are not differentiated.

To further differentiate the three, let us say a mother is looking for a computer for her son.  She needs something that is not very sophisticated but prefers one that can quickly process video clips.  She expects technical support when need arises.

Another factor to consider in checking out hot items is to find out the people’s general interest level about the product.  Are there people looking for the product?  Are there merchants offering that product?

If there are no discussions and forums taking place, if there are only few searches made in the search engines, if there is low sales registered on that particular product, then there is very low demand for the product.  The general interest is low and engaging in such an affiliate program would not be wise.

The next thing to consider in finding hot selling items is the level of competition the product will have.  The level of competition is determined by the ratio of one's brand sales against the total market sales.  If Brand X is selling 150 out of the total of 1,500 items for all brands including Brand X, then the level of competition 1:10.  The market share of Brand X is 10% of the total sales.

Choose the market where you can register a strong challenger role or at most a potential leadership status.  Check which brand of product has the biggest sale, best quality, and consumer patronage.  A product may not have the biggest sale but if the quality is good, it has the potential of registering a challenger role.  To assert that position is to apply other techniques which merchants and affiliates must learn, one of which is advertising.

If there are many ads running or being published about a product, then it might be a product that really sells. Check those ads.  See how they are presented.  Carefully read and study the words used.  Learn how those ads make profits.  Check the number of clicks made.  Verify if the ads are converting.  Once done, think how you will do your own ads to make a difference.

After all the research has been done, the next thing to do is to analyze and evaluate the information gathered.   Closely study the demand, competition, and the advertising done.

If there is not enough demand on a certain product, not many people are buying the product and the future demand is not favorable.  Conversely, if there is high demand, many people are buying and the demand for the immediate future is also high.

On the competition aspect, if there are many people involved in promoting and selling the product, the market share for each entrant is minimal.  This means low profit for an average affiliate, but for smart affiliates who can register a challenger role, it means cornering a big chunk of the entire market.

Competition is also a factor in the advertising cost.  The many competitors for a certain product, the higher the advertising cost.  If there is too much advertising, advertising cost like in pay-per-click also increases.

If the demand is low and the general interest is pale, the market may not be a good one to engage with even if there is competition present.

These are just general factors but they provide the basis for whatever decision you will make.  Your decision may still prove to be not a good one after some time, but the most important part of the process is realizing the lessons learned out of the decision.  This is where balance strikes.
