Different Ways to Make Money through Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing has made life easier for many people.  They don’t have to maintain a physical store and office to conduct business.  The automated system has improved delivery and transactions.  Geographical boundaries have been removed.  Things and people have become within reach.  The gap between big businessmen and small entrepreneurs has narrowed.  A new dimension has risen.

For people in sales and marketing, the market has become wider.  This means bigger profit and more opportunities.  With some simple clicking and browsing, people reach destinations, acquire information, and make decisions.  If they like what they saw, they remain; if things do not appeal at a glance, they leave.

Everyone interested has a place in affiliate marketing.  It does not require huge sums of money to start up.  Being the most popular and fastest growing method of selling other people’s products online, affiliate marketing is a relationship between an online merchant or a retailer who has products to sell, and affiliates who are willing to promote and sell the merchant’s products.

The process to undergo is indeed simple.  To join, one just needs to sign up to a merchant that has the product to sell.  The products are wide and varied but it is important to choose the one with significant interest to the affiliate.  Signing up is usually free and processing is fast.  Once approved by the merchant, the affiliate can already start promoting, selling, and earning money.

One may opt to sign up for an affiliate program or an affiliate network.  The affiliate program is offered directly by a merchant of a particular product.  The affiliate network is a group of merchants linked together and therefore has a wider array of products to promote and sell.  Joining an affiliate network may be free but others charge a particular fee for additional services the network may offer.

In signing up, the applicant fills up a form and provides information about himself or herself.  Some affiliate programs may require a URL of the applicant’s website and its contents to make sure that the merchant’s product is related.  Some merchants may not need one and the applicant can already start upon acceptance.

Typically, the merchant provides his affiliates with banners and text ads that link to his site.  The affiliates post the ads in their website.  When visitors to affiliate’s site clicks the banner or text ads, the visitors automatically are redirected to the merchant’s website where more information are provided and where purchase is made.  The merchant may offer payment to the affiliate just by sending traffic to the merchant’s site, or only when a sale has been made.

When the merchant pays an affiliate who simply sent traffic to the site, this type of affiliate program is called pay-per-click (PPC).  The affiliate only gets paid a small amount but it definitely adds to the affiliate’s earnings in the long run.

When the affiliate gets a commission for the successful sale made out of sending the visitor to the merchant’s site, this type of affiliate program is called pay-per-sale (PPS).  The usual percentage of commission ranges from 15% to 30% of the sale.  Some may offer as high as 50% to 60%.

Another way to earn money from an affiliate program is when the affiliate successfully generated a lead.  This is called pay-per-lead (PPL) where a fixed amount is paid when the affiliate’s referral converts into a lead for the company.

When the affiliate is allowed to recommend other affiliates to the merchant, the affiliate program is said to be two-tier.  The affiliate gets paid for the traffic or sales made out of clicking the affiliate link, and he also gets paid for every traffic and sales directed by the other affiliate who was referred by the former affiliate.

Another related affiliate program is the residual affiliate program.  The affiliate in this type of program gets paid when a visitor successfully becomes the merchant’s customer.  The pay for this first instance of conversion is lower compared with a one-time commission-based affiliate program. However, the affiliate gets to earn a number of times for as long as the customer remains with the merchant.  If the customer stays for a year, the affiliate continuously earns for a year.  It may be in a form of commission every time the customer makes a purchase; or a monthly percentage for as long as the customer remains a member of the merchant’s list.

There are many ways in which anyone can earn from affiliate marketing.  If others can make millions in a year, anyone can also do this.  Affiliates just need to spend more serious time with affiliate marketing, learn the techniques and strategies, and develop positive attitudes and mindset.
